Which Car Seat Style is Right for My Baby or Child?

Which Car Seat Style is Right for My Baby or Child is a common question. First off you baby or child’s age is important when determining which car seat you will need. Overall there are 4 primary different types of car seats commonly available, which are: infant car seats, convertible car seats, 3 in 1 car seats, and booster seats. Most children require at least two different car seat styles over time in order to accommodate their quick growth. Here are some basic descriptions and common weight limits for each of the types of car seats you may find as you research your many options.

1. Infant Car Seats
Infant car seats are designed to offer maximum support to a infant’s head, neck and back. Typically they include a “stay in car” base that allows you to easily remove just the seat and use it as a baby carrier allowing the baby to sleep in it when they are both in or out of the car. Many convertible car seats (described below) also are made to include an infant car seat setup. Many also are made to easily attach to compatible strollers which serves as a third purpose making them a car seat, baby carrier, and stroller in one package. Please note that the American Academy of Pediatrics highly recommends that all infants and toddlers should ride only in a rear facing child safety seat until they are at a minimum of 2 years of age, or ideally when they exceed the maximum height or weight allowed by the manufacturer of their child safety seat, which generally happens around age 3 or 4.
Seat Direction: Rear Facing Only
Common Infant Car Seat Weight Guidelines: 4 lbs to 35 lbs
*always check with the individual manufacturers for each seats specific weight guidelines and proper usage

2. Convertible Car Seats
Convertible car seats are typically the best value since they are adaptable as your child grows. Many convertible car seats can be used from newborn all the way to their toddler years. Once a child is of the proper weight, and is at least 2 years old, the seat can usually be switched from rear facing to forward facing and is usable until they reach they move on to a booster seat.
Seat Direction: Converts from rear facing to forward facing as the child grows to forward facing size and is at least 2 years old
Common Convertible Car Seat Weight Guidelines: 5 lbs to 65+ lbs
*always check with the individual manufacturers for each seats specific weight guidelines and proper usage

3. Booster Car Seats
Booster seats are made for older children (approximately ages 4-8 years old typically) and are usually a single seat with no back or a high back and come with an integrated harness, or use the car seat belt. They are commonly used as the last step before a child graduates on to normal car riding with a seat belt.
Seat Direction: Forward-facing only
Common Booster Car Seat Weight Guidelines: 30 lbs to 100+ lbs.
*always check with the individual manufacturers for each seats specific weight guidelines and proper usage

4. Three-In-One (All-In-One) Car Seats
A three in one, or all in one, car seat offers a one size fits all approach allowing you to use the same car seat from an infant all the way until the child no longer needs a booster seat. They typically can hold an infant rear-facing from about 5 to 50 pounds; forward-facing in a harness from about 20 to 80 pounds; and forward-facing as a backless or high-backed booster with a maximum weight of 100 or so pounds depending on the model of car seat. So why buy anything other than a 3-in-1 model car seat? The issue is with safety. While these types of car seats are rated and will fit most newborns most experts agree that infants under 20 lbs are safest when they are secured in a standard infant car seat over a 3-in-1 model.
Seat Direction: Converts from rear facing to forward facing as the child grows to forward facing size and is at least 2 years old
Common Three-In-One Car Seat Weight Guidelines: 5 lbs to 100+ lbs.
*always check with the individual manufacturers for each seats specific weight guidelines and proper usage
